This qualification is designed to meet the needs of builders and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses. Although there is no pre-existing skills and knowledge requirements from the training package, prior skills and knowledge relating to building and construction is advantageous. 

To enrol in this qualification, participants must:

  • be aged 18 years or over
  • hold a minimum of a High School Certificate (or equivalent)
  • be able to commit to the course duration and time commitment

As part of the pre-enrolment process, your language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills will be assessed to ensure the course is suitable for you and that any necessary support can be identified early.

In addition, to complete the practical components, you are required to currently work in the building and construction industry and will need to have access to a construction workplace. If you do not have access to a construction site, please talk to us before applying for this course. 

Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (White Card) meets this requirement.

For the theory components, you also need to have access to a computer with internet connection, as well as access to the Microsoft Office Applications.

This training is subsidised by the NSW Government through the Smart and Skilled program.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 15 years old or over

  • Are no longer at school

  • Live or work in NSW

  • Are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen

Assessment may include some or all of the following methods:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and/or Credit Transfer

  • Class activities and presentations

  • Knowledge questions

  • Practical performance assessments (workplace or simulated)

These assessments are designed to ensure you can demonstrate the skills and knowledge required for your qualification.

Your previous work experience or formal qualifications may count towards your course. If you have completed study at a recognised training organisation or have relevant industry experience, you may be eligible for credit transfer or recognition of prior learning (RPL). This can reduce the number of units you need to complete and shorten your overall study time.
How to Become A Licensed Builder in NSW

Qualification Requirements

Pathway 1: CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction with the required units of competency plus a current Carpentry or Bricklaying contractor licence or supervisor certificate.

Pathway 2: CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction plus CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) with the required units of competency.

Pathway 3: A relevant degree in building, construction, construction management, construction project management, construction economics, applied science (building), or quantity surveying from an Australian university. The degree must include the equivalent of four years’ full-time study and a mandatory work placement.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience under a builder’s supervision, obtained within the last 10 years.
