There’s never been a better time to start a traineeship in NSW. Under the NSW Government Fee-Free Traineeship initiative, NSW trainees that commence their traineeship qualification on or after 1 January 2020 may be eligible for fee free training.

As a new-entrant trainee*, you are eligible to a government subsidy for your traineeship qualification, even if you already have a Certificate IV or higher qualification.

Am I Eligible?

Fee-Free traineeships are available for NSW New Entrant trainees* and have commenced your Smart and Skilled traineeship training after 1 January 2020. To be eligible for Smart and Skilled training, students MUST:

  • 15 years old or over
  • no longer at school
  • living or working in NSW
  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen

STEP 1 - Application and approval

The employer and proposed trainee complete and sign the Training Contract with the assistance of their Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP). The ANP submit applications to Training Services NSW for approval.

STEP 2 - After Approval

Once the application is approved by the Training Services NSW, Living Planit will develop a full Training Plan in consultation with the employer and trainee and provide them with a copy.

STEP 3 - Training Delivery and Ongoing

Living Planit will schedule and commence formal training. Employers should check regularly with Living Planit to make sure that the trainee is attending training and is making satisfactory progress towards achieving their qualification. Employers must ensure that the trainee receives the work-based training by providing appropriate supervision and all necessary facilities, resources and opportunities to acquire the skills of the vocation.

STEP 4 - Completion

Traineeships generally take around 1-2 years to complete. Once the trainee has been notified that they have completed their formal training with Living Planit, the employer will consider whether the trainee has met the industry standard. If yes, the parties then have the option of applying for Competency-based Completion of the traineeship before the nominal term.
